COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local safety officials warn that back-to-school photos may share personal details that risk children’s safety. Parents are advised to remove identifiers such as school names, ages, and house numbers—details that could help predators locate children.  WSLS 10
  • Pickleball players will soon enjoy Buchanan Recreation Park's newly renovated courts—upgraded to modern standards. Officials say the park will host tournaments and lessons as interest in the sport grows.  WDBJ7
  • The Town of Blacksburg is inviting residents to fill out an online survey until September 15 at 5pm—citizens can view renderings of four potential sites for a future recreation facility—and share their feedback to guide plans.  New River Valley News

  • RPD arrested a suspect on Aug. 14 after a stabbing injured a woman, police said.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • JBR Vineyards will host its 6th annual Pawpaw Festival on September 6-7 with free admission, live music plus wine tasting, a walk through the pawpaw patch, and vineyard tours. Saturday will feature the Fisher Peak Timber Rattlers and a band led by Stu Shenk while Sunday will feature folk singer Bobby Parker and his regional tunes.  New River Valley News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Tech will host the Kentland Farm Field Day on Tuesday, September 9 at Kentland Farm in Blacksburg — the event will feature a 1 p.m. pre-tour and sessions on livestock, forages and horticulture from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with an optional campfire networking gathering afterward. Registration costs $20 and is open to 200 participants until September 2.  New River Valley News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Blacksburg is amending its subdivision ordinance to incorporate stakeholder feedback and new state legislation. A public meeting was held yesterday at 5:30 p.m. at Blacksburg Motor Company—residents submitted questions and comments for review.  New River Valley News
