About this event
What is early music? Early music refers to European music written from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, roughly before 1750. It is often performed using historical techniques and instruments to recreate the sound audiences would have heard when the music was first composed. Vox Luminis is internationally recognized for bringing this music to life with clarity, warmth, and expressive singing. What is sacred music? Sacred music is music written for religious worship or inspired by spiritual themes. Many of the works performed by Vox Luminis were originally composed for church services or religious celebrations. Even for listeners without a religious background, the music is admired for its beauty, emotional depth, and rich choral harmonies. Is this an a cappella performance? No. While Vox Luminis is renowned for its choral singing, this performance also features a full orchestra. Together, the singers and instrumentalists bring Claudio Monteverdi's music to life with rich vocal harmonies and vibrant orchestral color. Is the music sad? Not at all. While some moments are reflective, the program spans a wide range of emotions, from joyful celebration and radiant beauty to quiet contemplation and dramatic intensity. Monteverdi's music is deeply expressive, making it as emotionally engaging today as it was more than 400 years ago. What is a Vespers service? Vespers is an evening prayer service in the Christian tradition. Claudio Monteverdi composed his Vespers of 1610 as a collection of sacred music inspired by this service. While it was written for a religious setting, today it is widely performed in concert halls and appreciated for its extraordinary beauty, emotional depth, and musical innovation by audiences of all backgrounds. What is call and response? Call and response is a musical conversation between different singers or groups of musicians. As Vox Luminis performs Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, you'll hear choirs, soloists, and instruments answering one another across the performance, creating a sense of movement, dialogue, and dramatic contrast. Does the audience participate? No. This is a concert performance by Vox Luminis, so there is no audience participation. Simply sit back and enjoy the music. While you may hear musical conversations between soloists, the choir, and the orchestra, those interactions happen entirely among the performers. Attending a Performance at the Center What should I wear? The most important thing is that you're comfortable. There is no dress code, so do what feels right for you. Do you want to get dressed to the nines for a special night out? You won't be the only one. Do you feel like keeping things casual? You won't be alone there, either. Where should I park? All campus parking , including along Alumni Mall, requires a parking permit from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted by signage.
