- ➤ Every Wednesday, about 60 families with pets line up through an alley at Homeward Trails as the pet pantry gives out only about 800 of the 3,000 pounds of pet food needed monthly—cat owners face the hardest shortage and volunteers expect the demand to double during the holiday season. WSLS 10
- ➤ Smithfield and Virginia Tech are teaming up to donate thousands of pounds of food to Feeding Southwest Virginia to help local students and residents in Blacksburg and Charlottesville—this marks the fifth year of their food relief effort and runs alongside the upcoming Commonwealth Clash events starting November 29. - ➤ A new World War II museum opened in Blacksburg at 1531 North Main Street, Suite C to help visitors learn about the historic conflict through interactive displays and authentic artifacts from curator Joseph Collins' personal collection (including a full-sized jeep, weapons and uniforms). - ➤ Virginia Tech's dean of science Kevin Pitts is hosting an open Thanksgiving dinner for all in Blacksburg on Thanksgiving Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the data and decision sciences building—Professional Catering LLC is preparing the meals for the fourth year in a row. WSLS 10
- ➤ SMART is an interdisciplinary capstone project at Virginia Tech where students develop a privacy-first smart home hub that uses an AR/VR interface with tap gestures to control devices. The project began in a first-year engineering class and has grown into a vertical study opportunity that lets students work with professors over four years—aligning their work with local industry needs.
