  • The YMCA at Virginia Tech announced its annual Holiday Tea event, which will be held on December 6 at Lancaster House in Blacksburg — seating is available in two sittings and tickets must be purchased by November 30. Proceeds from the event will support YMCA programs including food security and youth outreach.  New River Valley News

  • Local restaurants reported an increase in Thanksgiving reservations—nearby diners are scheduling meals at their favorite eateries for the upcoming holiday. The rise in bookings suggests that many plan to dine out for Thanksgiving this year.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty, students and community members joined International Education Week in Blacksburg with workshops, music and cultural displays to honor global diversity and build international connections—Virginia Tech hosted its fifth celebration and invited community groups to add their own events.  Virginia Tech News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Olivia Bledsoe, a junior in CNRE's Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, joined three other women on an 80-day, 1,300-mile canoe trip from Lake Superior to Hudson Bay this summer to be the first all-female team to complete the route and advocate protection for the Boundary Waters from mining. The team faced tough portages, unpredictable water conditions, equipment failures, and wildlife encounters—challenges that tested their skills and resolve.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that $610,350 in federal Specialty Crop Block Grant funding has been awarded to seven agricultural projects across Virginia to enhance research and competitiveness in specialty crops + one project at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg leads efforts to improve water treatment and pest management. This funding will support diverse projects that aim to boost production, increase market opportunities and benefit Virginia's farmers.  New River Valley News
  • Local agencies launched Crash Responder Safety Week to review protocols and train for emergencies—this program will run throughout the week to boost responses during crash incidents.  WDBJ7
  • The Virginia DMV started the Click It or Ticket campaign today to remind everyone in a vehicle to buckle up for safe holiday travel—law enforcement will boost patrols until November 30 and new seat belt rules now apply to all passengers. DMV offices will be closed from November 27 through 29, so customers must use online services during that period.  New River Valley News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist told Blacksburg residents to wash their bed sheets at least once a week — using the hot wash cycle helps kill bacteria, dust, and pet dander that build up as skin and dirt mix with the fabric. She also recommended showering before bed and drying wet hair to keep the bedding clean.  WSLS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech finalized a five-plus year contract with new head football coach James Franklin on November 21. He was introduced on November 19 in Blacksburg — the deal is valued at $41,750,000 and marks a new chapter for the Hokies.  WDBJ7
