ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that national gas prices fell by 0.4 cents to $3.03 per gallon while Virginia remains a bit lower at about $2.95 per gallon, with Blacksburg around $2.85 and neighboring areas showing similar variations. Analysts said stable oil prices and upcoming refinery maintenance may bring the national average below $3 per gallon by Christmas—further details on travel behavior will be available tomorrow.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech passed its research spending goal by receiving $419 million last fiscal year and now aims for $600 million in fiscal year 2029 — the university will seek extra funds to cover gaps left by federal cuts.  Cardinal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT announced it will temporarily lift lane closures and highway work zones on major roads & interstate highways from noon on November 26 to noon on December 1 for the Thanksgiving travel season. Drivers are advised that some semi-permanent zones will remain active during this period and to check VDOT traffic alerts for updates.  WDBJ7
  • The Town of Blacksburg partnered with Blacksburg Partnership, Virginia Tech and Downtown Blacksburg Inc to launch a 5-year plan to revitalize downtown with projects that include an annual façade improvement program, a retail incubator opening fall and streetscape upgrades. Officials said they will share regular updates on progress — aiming to support local businesses, students and residents.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local doctors say flu season started early this year with rising cases in children — they urged parents to vaccinate kids over 6 months and have other household members immunized for those too young to get the shot.
