COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA at Virginia Tech opened its Corner Market on Nov. 3 to help local families facing food insecurity from SNAP benefit disruptions — the market offers free food for anyone with an EBT card and seeks donations to keep shelves stocked. Located at the Y Center on N. Main St, it operates Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5–7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.  News Messenger
  • The Blacksburg High School Student Council Association is asking local residents to donate to its long-standing Thanksgiving Baskets Project that helps families in need. They have raised $12,500 so far and need an extra $6,000—donations will be accepted until the end of the month.  News Messenger

  • Dr. Jack M. Lewis was named President Emeritus at New River Community College in recognition of more than 40 years of service, with the title presented by President Robert Brandon at a special ceremony.   • Christiansburg alum Adriauna Easter has been a member of Virginia Tech’s Marching Virginians for four years and now serves as a senior captain of the clarinet section.   • Professor Xiaoting Jia at Virginia Tech developed fiber-based neural implants that use a new manufacturing process to create smart fibers as thin as a human hair—this research, published Nov 17, may help treat Alzheimer's, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.
