EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech renovated seven Vawter Hall bathrooms during the summers of 2024 and 2025 to fix aging fixtures, water issues, and to update energy and accessibility features—Interim vice president Mark Owczarski said the $2 million project also supports plans for further dorm renovations. The university will consider extra updates at older residence halls to improve comfort and safety for students.  Collegiate Times
  • Virginia Tech's Class of 2027 has introduced a new ring collection in honor of Fay H. Street—its designs show local landscapes and Hokie pride. Students can order rings online now and will order in person from Dec. 10 to 12 and Jan. 17 to 18 while they attend the Ring Dance on March 28 at War Memorial Hall.  Collegiate Times
  • Virginia Tech will host International Education Week from Nov. 11 to 18—a week of global events and cultural exchange for students and visitors. The events include an opening reception at Perspectives Gallery with a passport giveaway, international performances at Haymarket Theatre and several webinars and workshops.  Collegiate Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The town collected loose and bagged leaves from residents starting Monday October 21 and will continue pick-ups in four quadrants through Friday December 6 — heavily forested neighborhoods will be revisited the week of December 9, and residents may call Public Works at 540-443-1200 to arrange for free leaf delivery for composting until February 1.  New River Valley News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that SNAP benefits will be deposited this week as Virginia pauses issuing Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance benefits to meet federal rules — the state will deliver 65% of the monthly benefits by Thursday, November 13 after 25% was already provided earlier in the month.  New River Valley News
  • Southwest Virginia Head Start programs remain open during the government shutdown—agencies report funding delays and staffing strains may affect services for children and families.  The Roanoke Times
  • Town Hall and the Aquatic Center will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day while the Recreation Center remains open but with administrative offices closed; solid waste and recycling scheduled for Tuesday will be collected on Wednesday.  New River Valley News
