EDUCATION NEWS

  • Julie Ross was named the new provost at Virginia Tech and will take office in January. She will serve as acting president + act as the university's second-highest official when the president is absent.  The Roanoke Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local agencies are helping families during the 36-day government shutdown. Feeding Southwest Virginia received $180,000 from the governor—letting it purchase four tractor trailers of food—while the Local Office on Aging plans a $100,000 fundraiser and the airport care cupboard remains open to support federal workers.  WDBJ7
