BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dominion Energy warns Blacksburg residents that phantom energy—waste from devices that remain plugged in when off—can add about $100 to annual bills, and it advises unplugging unused items or using smart power strips to cut power automatically.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Kathryn Albright took her School of Architecture students to Belvedere Gardens Mausoleum at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem to practice sketching and documenting architecture—an exercise that will help them develop skills for future design work.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT will replace two drainage culverts on Route 1330 at Eaglebrook Road, with one culvert crossing Smith Creek 0.02 mile from Route 675 and the other 0.1 mile away to improve drainage. Residents may request a public hearing by sending a written request to Jack Bayne by November 20th — additional project details and the National Environmental Policy Act document are available for review at the Salem District Office at 731 Harrison Avenue.  News Messenger
  • Virginia voters will elect their next governor on November 4 in a historic race that may yield the state’s first female governor. Former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and incumbent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears are competing, and early voting began on September 19 — hundreds of thousands have already cast ballots.  WSLS 10
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced a partnership with AstraZeneca—Lilly—Merck to invest up to $120 million in Virginia’s new Center for Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, which will work with local colleges to train 2,000—2,500 skilled professionals annually. The center will boost the state’s biopharma industry along the Richmond—Charlottesville corridor by building a strong talent pipeline for high-quality jobs.  New River Valley News
