- ➤ Dozens of food pantries and partner agencies gathered on Thursday in Salem to share strategies and resources amid rising hunger and uncertainty around SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Blue Ridge Innovation Corridor has become a nonprofit that connects Blacksburg, Roanoke, Danville and Martinsville to form a new economic engine for the region. The group has set plans for Vision 2050 in 2026, formed an executive committee and board, and started studying critical infrastructure needs along U.S. 220—an important route for future growth. - ➤ Patrick Promise announced a program offering free community college education to PCHS students on Oct. 30. The program will help eligible students start college without paying tuition—opening doors for further learning. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia is launching the Emergency Nutrition Assistance Program—VENA—to give SNAP recipients weekly food benefits when federal aid pauses on November 1. The state will deposit 25% of a household’s monthly benefit weekly on existing EBT cards for about 430,000 households and is adding funds to support local food banks. WSLS 10
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials designed a free clinic - aimed to offer acupuncture treatment for first responders in Blacksburg. The clinic will open soon - providing extra support to ease stress and pain for those who serve the community. WDBJ7
- ➤ Virginia Tech is leading a $40 million, five-year project called BRAVE, short for Bio Aerosol Risk Assessment Intervention Engineering, to develop a smart indoor air quality system that works like a smoke alarm—detecting viruses, bacteria, allergens and fungi in real time and adjusting building ventilation. Initial testing will begin in daycare facilities while a team from eight institutions works to reduce respiratory risks by 25 percent. WSLS 10
