BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau began fall maintenance work on October 27th to update its facilities+ ensure operational safety. More details about the schedule and upcoming improvements are expected soon.  WDBJ7
  • Mountain Valley Pipeline proposed an expansion to carry more natural gas — including a new compressor station in Montgomery County — to federal regulators on October 23rd. Federal officials will review the plan in the coming weeks.  The Roanoke Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Prochem, Inc. agreed to pay $1.9 million to settle water contamination issues that raised local safety concerns. The settlement was reached last evening and the company will face ongoing regulatory monitoring—ensuring compliance with state standards.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows child poverty in Virginia rose to 12%—over 230,000 children now face economic hardship as gains from the pandemic are reversed. Experts say key support programs are needed to help working families stay afloat.  WSLS 10
  • The DMV and VHSL announced a new 'Buckle Up, Phone Down' campaign that will urge young drivers to wear seat belts and put their phones away while driving—materials for the campaign will be shared at high school sports events and online.   • Virginia Tech experts advise families to avoid homemade candy this Halloween because it is hard to know what ingredients are in these treats—untested items may cause allergies or sickness. They recommend using store-bought candy for a safer, more predictable treat experience.  WSET
