COMMUNITY NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB released a report on last month’s landing mishap at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport—detailing the incident and recommending safety reviews—and officials are expected to consider new measures soon.  WDBJ7
  • The NTSB released its preliminary report on a September runway incident at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport when a United Express Embraer jet touched down too far in heavy rain and slid into an engineered materials arresting system (no one was injured) as investigators continue reviewing the factors behind the event.  WSLS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • WDBJ7 went off air on Oct.22 due to a transmitter issue—engineers worked quickly to restore service and ensure newscasts remained available online.  WDBJ7
  • Goodwill is offering spooky bargains on Halloween costumes for local shoppers, and details vary by store—deal options may change soon.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Smithfield will host a Halloween celebration on October 31 — local residents can join family-friendly festivities planned for the event.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Appalachian Power said it is asking the Virginia State Corporation Commission to lower its fuel factor rate from 4.139¢/kWh to 3.133¢/kWh, which will lower monthly fuel costs by about $10.06 for a 1,000 kWh customer when the new rate takes effect Nov. 1. Virginia residential customers will then pay 16.36 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is below the national average of 16.48 cents per kilowatt-hour.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport set a new record in 2024 by serving over 756,000 travelers, a 2.8% increase from the previous record that shows the value of flying local. Local leaders say booking tickets at ROA will help attract more airlines and improve airport funding so our community can grow and support more jobs.  Cardinal News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Shaun Rosier’s landscape architecture course at the Graduate Life Center are taking a sketch walk today to study the natural and built environment around them. The exercise is designed to help them learn to read landscapes—showing how people, history, and buildings shape local community spaces.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local organizations are helping as the government shutdown continues 22 days by working with food banks, grocery stores, and Feeding America partners to support 177,000 SNAP recipients and airport employees who missed paychecks. Feeding Southwest Virginia is gathering donations and coordinating efforts—an effort to keep food supplies available until federal services resume.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • The local Office on Aging now offers free Medicare counseling for seniors to get clear advice on Medicare plans — the service aims to help them save money — by providing unbiased guidance.  The Roanoke Times
