COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meghan Wilson, a Virginia Tech professor and owner of Whiskey Springs Farm, has turned her 80-acre property in Blacksburg into an agritourism spot featuring Scottish Highland cows, miniature donkeys, and early-morning coffee with cows—an event that gives visitors a peaceful start to the day. The farm will hold a fall festival on Sunday, Oct. 25 from 1-4 p.m. in partnership with Little Big Dog Rescue offering free pet adoptions.  News Messenger
  • On Oct. 21, 2025, a nonprofit helped teens leaving foster care get important support to start living on their own in our community—services included mentoring, housing, job training, and educational help. The organization worked with local agencies to ensure each teen had the tools they needed to succeed.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation is hosting a series of fall and winter events at The Alexander Black House including the mourning exhibit The Art of Goodbye (running Sept 30–Nov 18), weekly gravestone rubbings and weekend haunted history tours in October, and a historic talk by Scott Crawford today at 6:30 p.m. Additional events feature musical and photography talks, a book signing on Nov 5 at St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall, a holiday tree display from Nov 29 to Jan 3, and a ukelele jam on Dec 13 with some events costing $25 and others free or donation-based.  New River Valley News

  • Virginia Tech IT expert Thomas Weeks—director of future technology—and Caeland Garner said that companies must invest more resources to secure networks as cyber attacks rise while users need to update devices to protect their data. They explained that attackers target open ports and may use AI to find bugs, which puts pressure on both experts and consumers.  Cardinal News
  • Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery County Fire and EMS launched a five-day training academy that gives students hands-on firefighting experience over three months—covering basic 911 operations and safety certifications like first aid, CPR, and stop the bleed. HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 2012, VT Therapy dogs (Josie, Derek, and Epcot) have visited hundreds of campus outreach events to help students feel calm and ease mental health concerns. Their regular appearances build a supportive atmosphere that helps reduce stigma around seeking care.  Virginia Tech News
  • Officials reported that bird flu cases have been detected in Virginia's black vultures, with one confirmed case in Wythe and additional cases in Smyth and Washington and investigations in Lynchburg and Danville. Local experts warn that the H5N1 virus can spread quickly among roosting birds—raising concerns for domestic poultry and backyard flocks.  WSLS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coaches and a Blue Ribbon Panel voted Duke first in the ACC Predicted Order of Finish for women’s basketball — Virginia Tech is predicted to finish tenth with no Hokie on any preseason team.  News Messenger
  • Mark LaCaria and Clay Remington have opened Greenseekers, an indoor golf simulator in Fairlawn that lets players enjoy golf year-round. The facility is available by pre-rental only and offers access to over 1,800 courses — it plans to establish membership leagues soon.  News Messenger
  • Christiansburg and Blacksburg high schools will compete this week for the Huckleberry Coal Miner’s helmet trophy—a symbol of our local coal mining and train history that started in 1902. Christiansburg has held the trophy for five years and the contest will decide the future owner in the ongoing Battle of the Burgs.  News Messenger
