COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Annual Buzzy Coleman Chili Cook-Off will take place soon in Blacksburg — local cooks will compete by serving their best chili recipes. Community members can sample the dishes and vote for their favorite chili.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County School Board will discuss starting a behind-the-wheel driver education program today at 750 Imperial St. SE in Christiansburg. The board will review proposals that include in-house instruction—an option that may require leasing vehicles and hiring extra instructors to reduce reliance on private companies.  Cardinal News
  • A Council of Independent Colleges report released on October 20th said federal changes to student aid—including cuts to Pell Grant eligibility and new loan limits—could reduce Virginia college enrollment by up to 12,000 and weaken the state’s talent pipeline. Lawmakers may need to raise the Tuition Assistance Grant to help families afford higher education and keep Virginia competitive.  Cardinal News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources said reports of dead black vultures across Virginia may be due to H5N1 avian influenza—officials warn that other bird species may also suffer as migration begins. The department advises residents to avoid handling dead birds and to report groups of five or more cases in one area within five days while using proper protective gear if disposing of any carcasses.  WDBJ7
  • The Power of Pink Luncheon will support those battling breast cancer by gathering survivors and health professionals to share information and raise funds—helping provide treatment resources. Organizers said the event will take place soon at a local venue.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech professor Abhishek Reddy discussed his study linking late-night screen use and easy access to medications with teen overdose attempts during the 'Curious Conversations' podcast (the research found most attempts occurred after 8 p.m. and nearly all involved screen time) and advised parents on better sleep routines and medication safety.  Virginia Tech News
