  • Goodwill Industries of the Valleys is hosting its annual Halloween Costume Contest Giveaway and will award $250 to each of two winners who post their thrifted costumes on social media by November 2 (winners announced November 3).  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia State Police have issued a senior alert for missing 75-year-old man Everett Lyndell Price in Christiansburg — he was last seen Sunday morning on County Drive Northeast and is at risk because of his cognitive impairment.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech ended its Homecoming from Sept. 29 to Oct. 4 when Carson Riley was crowned among the royalty winners during the Hokies’ football game—he campaigned to raise awareness for pornography addiction as his faith-based fraternity’s representative and plans a panel discussion with experts using a $1,000 prize.  Collegiate Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jason Price Foundation is hosting its first All-in for Cancer Poker Tournament in Blacksburg — the event includes a silent auction and poker games, with proceeds benefiting the new cancer wing at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and 10 South Legacy.  WSLS 10
  • Hokie Wellness is hosting its third annual World Mental Health Day event today in the Owens Ballroom at Virginia Tech—featuring art projects, DIY stress balls, and therapy dogs scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m.—and the fair offers mental health resources with wellness books and peer support.  Collegiate Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech’s governing board voted 13—1 at a recent meeting to approve a plan to invest an additional $229.2 million in athletics over the next four years, raising funds from philanthropy, institutional support, and higher student fees. The decision shows that college sports cost far more than minor league programs—making them operate more like junior professional teams.  Cardinal News
