EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is planning to expand its teaching hospital to improve student training and modernize outdated spaces. The project will add 32000 square feet to the existing 22000 square foot facility—final approval is expected next Summer and construction will begin in December if a $9 million fund goal is met. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Chuck Simpson, president of the Western VA Labor Federation, said the right-to-work law weakens unions and lowers wages—he urged lawmakers to repeal the law before the next General Assembly to ensure all workers pay their fair share. Cardinal News
- ➤ Three energy companies and Virginia Energy will study sites for new power plants between Roanoke and Bristol to meet rising energy demand—while the Virginia Board of Historic Resources approved eight historical markers in Southwest and Southside and Gov. Youngkin announced board appointments that include local leaders. Cardinal News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Virginia officials are urging backyard bird owners to boost biosecurity as wild waterfowl migration will resume this fall amid concerns over highly pathogenic avian influenza—owners should restrict bird contact and disinfect equipment to protect their flocks. They said that these precautions will help prevent the fast-spreading virus from infecting domestic birds. WSLS 10
