COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Homestead Creamery is hosting its Farm Day event today on its farm in Blacksburg where local families can enjoy hands-on activities — taste fresh produce and meet local farmers.  WDBJ7
  • Jeter Farm will host its Fall Festival and Country Store with seasonal activities and local vendors for a family-friendly gathering.  WDBJ7
  • The New River Valley Home Builders Association Women in Building Committee held its second annual Build Her Dreams Bed Build event on Saturday, September 27 to mark Professional Women in Building Week and National Workforce Development Month. Over 125 volunteers built 40 beds for children in need while more than 80 local girls gained hands-on construction skills — inspiring future careers in the industry.  New River Valley News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new list of Halloween and fall events in Central and Southwest Virginia has been released for residents to plan festive activities. The list covers events across five zones (for example, the Grave Matters event in Blacksburg on Oct.17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.) and provides key details on location and timing.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 3, the Appalachian Regional Commission awarded a $500,000 grant to the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Development Foundation—based in Radford—to train 200 individuals, support 100 businesses and launch eight workforce initiatives. Two subgrantees, the Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement and the Center for Manufacturing Excellence of Southwest Virginia, will provide technical training and outreach across several counties.  New River Valley News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Blacksburg woman led a campaign to raise awareness about a rare disease—she organized community events and shared her story to help people understand the condition.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech announced the formation of an eight-member search committee—featuring Bruce Arians, Bud Foster, and others—to find a new head football coach after Brent Pry was relieved in September. The committee works under President Tim Sands and Athletic Director Whit Babcock while the Board of Visitors recently approved a $229 million plan to boost athletic programs.  WSLS 10
