EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech released its annual safety report on Oct.1 which shared campus crime statistics and planned security measures. The report offers key insights & recommendations for future improvements.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia officials warn that the ongoing federal shutdown may soon lead to staffing shortages at Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport and reduced services at national parks—forcing federal workers to work without pay if Congress does not act. Gov. Youngkin and Sen. Kaine urged a rapid funding resolution to avoid further disruptions to travel and tourism.  WDBJ7
  • Montgomery County announced that a section of the Huckleberry Trail will be closed starting Nov. 3 for bridge and trail repairs—expected to reopen in March 2026. Signs have been posted in Blacksburg and Christiansburg so pedestrians and cyclists know no detour is available.  WSET
  • U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are working to keep the Discovery Space Shuttle in Virginia even as some lawmakers favor moving it to Houston—where a relocation plan could cost over $50 million and risk public access; the shuttle has been at the Udvar-Hazy Center since 2012.  WDBJ7
