  • A cancer survivor opened a new business in Blacksburg on September 29—he wants to share his journey by offering services that support local customers.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Onward New River Valley honored Patton Logistics and Luna Labs with the 2025 Regional Impact Awards on September 11, recognizing their expansion plans that created 33 new jobs and $10.27 million in capital investment—$10 million for Patton Logistics in Pulaski County and $270,000 for Luna Labs in Montgomery County.  New River Valley News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new agricultural program in Blacksburg now teaches high school students practical farm skills and business lessons to help them start careers in agriculture. The fast-track course partners with local farms to offer real-world training—promising more job opportunities.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab is known worldwide for testing sports helmets and other head safety gear using star ratings—Dick’s Sporting Goods now shows these ratings in store displays. The lab has tested thousands of helmets and will release results for construction gear next May—researchers are also working on tests for drones and sports masks.  WSET
  • Virginia Tech's Ag Tech Program is giving students a fast track to jobs in farming and science by combining classroom lessons with practical training with local companies + it will help prepare them for the workforce.   • Virginia Tech Board of Visitors meets today to consider a proposal to raise mandatory student fees for athletics from $732 to $1,032 over three years—an effort to keep the teams competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference. FINANCE NEWS

  • Virginia Tech professor J’Adrian Wooten said the drop in production in the cardboard box industry—down 10–15 percent as companies plan fewer boxes for the holiday season—may signal a future recession, a worry that local residents share due to rising inflation and unemployment.  WSLS 10
  • Governor Youngkin said strong job growth and over $10 billion in surplus revenue are fueling a record $9 billion in tax relief, but only residents who filed their 2024 state taxes by November 3rd and had a tax liability will qualify; rebates will come via direct deposit or paper check (up to $200 for individuals and $400 for joint filers) and any debt will be deducted from the refund.  WSLS 10
