ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Officials said a commercial jet overran the runway on Wednesday at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport and that the EMAS worked as designed to protect all 53 passengers while cleanup is underway and the runway will reopen in the next couple of weeks at reduced capacity—another runway remains operational. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ WDBJ7 previewed its 70th anniversary with an overview of its history and plans for future celebrations—featuring interviews and archival clips to mark the milestone. The station will hold special events in the coming weeks to bring the community together. WDBJ7
- ➤ Step Afrika! performed a matinee for Virginia Tech students on Friday, showcasing energetic stepping that reflects African American culture, and will perform live today at 7:30 p.m. The dance company is known globally, having performed in over 60 countries+ including the White House. WSLS 10
- ➤ The 2026 Best of Blue Ridge Contest nominations are underway and close on Oct. 6—readers can nominate local trails, festivals, races, and drinks—final voting runs from Oct. 13 to Oct. 27. This contest lets locals help decide their favorite outdoor spots and events. WSLS 10
- ➤ Built in 1950, the historic N&W 611 steam locomotive returned to the rails Friday in Goshen—bringing rail fans together for scenic passenger excursions through the Shenandoah Valley. The Virginia Scenic Railway will operate the Shenandoah Valley Limited trips for five weekends starting Sept. 26 from Victoria Station. WSLS 10

- ➤ A RU student pianist turned his injury into inspiration by working hard to continue his music studies—he uses his recovery as a lesson in perseverance and dedication. WDBJ7
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Kirk Family YMCA launched classes for seniors yesterday — designed to help them stay strong and reduce fall risks — and will add more sessions soon for Blacksburg residents. The program aims to improve balance and overall health for its older participants. WDBJ7
