- ➤ The investigation continues into a plane that overran the runway on Wednesday at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport—53 passengers and crew were unharmed despite flight delays on Thursday and a runway closure until repairs are complete. WSET

- ➤ 7 Brew Coffee will open a drive-through coffee location in Danville by early 2026 in the former Western Sizzlin' building on Riverside Drive. The company plans to expand further into western Virginia with stores possibly opening in Blacksburg, Roanoke, Winchester and Charlottesville. WSET

- ➤ Attorney General Jason Miyares announced today that his office, the FTC and 18 other states have closed down a deceptive charity fundraising scheme run by Kars that falsely claimed to support cancer patients. The settlement will bar Kars from future fundraising and return $550,000 to cancer charities. New River Valley News

- ➤ Virginia Tech board of visitors will meet Tuesday to consider a proposal to raise the mandatory student fee for athletics so the university can boost its sports budget to $212.1m by fiscal year 2029—this fee will increase from $732 this year to $1,032 by 2029 and is expected to yield an extra $21.3 million in funding. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine research led by child and adolescent psychiatry physician Abhishek Reddy shows that teenagers who use screens before bed are more likely to attempt suicide by overdosing on medications (both prescription and over-the-counter). Reddy will present his findings at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry meeting (Oct. 20-25 in Chicago) and recommends limiting screen time and securing medications to help reduce self-harm risks.
