COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug. 27, the local chapter of 100+ Women Who Care donated over $13,000 to Blacksburg Refugee Partnership in Blacksburg—an organization run by volunteers who help displaced families settle and find work. The group has already assisted 90 individuals from five countries with services like English classes, healthcare, and job placement.  News Messenger

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ricky Cox, Alice Slusher and Catherine Pauley will talk about the photographic works of Dick Shank and Gertrue Shank at Glencoe Mansion on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. The free event will be followed by a Pickles and Cake Reception—running until 7 p.m.—and the exhibit will be on display through Oct. 29.  News Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 30 students in the Montgomery Junior Appalachian Musicians (MJAM) program gathered on Sept. 8 at the Montgomery Museum of Art and History to start the new school season with music lessons, instrument checks, refreshments and a group jam session led by director Jason Dilg. They will meet on Mondays at the museum and other local sites, with sessions in guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, dulcimer and a new class in mandolin play (grades 4-8).  News Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 16, the FAA awarded a $474,406 grant to the New River Valley Airport Commission for constructing new 152,000-square-foot hangars and rehabilitating 40,000 square yards of apron pavement at the New River Valley Airport near Dublin. The commission—comprising Pulaski, Montgomery and Giles Counties—said the funding would support vital improvements for aircraft storage and maintenance.  New River Valley News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association will host the New River Valley Heart Walk at Christiansburg Huckleberry Park on Oct. 11 to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke. The event will offer a Kids Zone — a fun area for children—and a Pup Parade for pets, with local sponsors like MOOG and Carilion Clinic supporting the cause.  News Messenger
  • A local chiropractor office in Blacksburg added a new space dedicated to Hokie Nation that offers wellness services for Virginia Tech students and fans—crafted with their needs in mind—and shows a rising focus on local health. The office unveiled the addition on September 16.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech’s interim football coach met with the media on September 16 to answer questions about the team’s performance and future adjustments. He said the team planned to make changes ahead of upcoming games.  WDBJ7
