- ➤ A new hidden disabilities sunflower program will be launched at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport to let travelers use a sunflower lanyard, bracelet, or pin+ which signals airport staff to offer extra support. The program, first used in London in 2016, will be available at the information booth during business hours+ and at the 24-hour public safety office. WSLS 10
- ➤ A Pet Talk article published on September 10th advised Blacksburg pet owners to review emergency plans—helping secure safety for both people and pets during National Disaster Preparedness Month. WDBJ7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Better Business Bureau said on Sep. 10 that it introduced new scam protection measures to help consumers in Blacksburg spot fraud—reporting tips and guidelines will be shared with local residents soon. WDBJ7
- ➤ Downtown Blacksburg Inc. and the town will soon launch a new Retail Incubator at the former Cook’s Cleaners site to support local entrepreneurs with shared storefronts — mentorship and marketing help are also offered. Groundbreaking is scheduled for September 22 and construction will start soon with plans to open Fall 2026. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that the Virginia Disaster Assistance Fund is accepting applications from homeowners and business owners in Southwest Virginia whose properties suffered major damage from Tropical Storm Helene and February winter storms—residents should contact their local government or Planning District Commission for guidelines and support. - ➤ The New River Valley MPO is amending its Transportation Improvement Program for 2024—27 to add a highway project on I 81 and adjust transit funding for Blacksburg Transit, Radford Transit and New River Valley Community Services. The amendment is available for review at local offices and online and comments will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. Oct 15—public input will be heard at a policy board meeting on Nov 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Montgomery County Government Center.
