- ➤ Virginia Tech is still investigating the unsolved murder of students Heidi Childs and David Metzler from 2009 at Caldwell Fields—police offer a $100,000 reward for any new tips. Collegiate Times
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Center for the Arts hosted an opening reception on Sept. 4 for two new exhibits that featured paintings by four artists including Josephine Halvorson who gave an opening statement as guests enjoyed food and drinks. An artists panel with Clare Grill and Margaux Ogden will be held on Sept. 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. Collegiate Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech began using AI on Aug.1 to review applications after a 10.2% rise—replacing one human reader with a system that scores essays, test scores, transcripts and extracurriculars. The fall 2027 application cycle started on Aug.1 and early applications will close on Nov.1 while the admissions team monitors the process for fairness. Collegiate Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Virginia Department of Transportation has recently put up warning signs in Christiansburg and Woodstock to keep highway overpasses for travel only—an effort aimed at deterring protests by older activists. State police arrested two senior demonstrators near Mount Jackson today for refusing to leave when ordered. The Roanoke Times
- ➤ Montgomery County supervisors will meet Monday night at 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg to discuss local control over potential data center siting—one key issue alongside tax exemptions for elderly and disabled residents.
