  • Val's Comfort Kitchen is featured in a Hometown Eats article that shows the restaurant offers comfort food to Blacksburg residents—its story was published on September 4 and joins a series highlighting local dining options.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lucy Gehman, an undergraduate student, conducted summer research with the Virginia Tech Shorebird Program run by Dr. Sarah Karpanty—she counted birds in the field and used GIS to study habitat changes. She co-authored a research report and publication that helped her gain key experience for her future career.  Virginia Tech News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at the Center for Ecosystem Forecasting have developed a water quality forecasting system that uses sensors, data analysis, AI, machine learning, and cyberinfrastructure to predict the quality of water in lakes and reservoirs globally—this system now helps the Western Virginia Water Authority guide its daily water treatment decisions for three local reservoirs.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials said the Wasena Bridge Replacement Project is making progress as crews replace the old structure to improve safety for local drivers — construction will continue over the next several weeks with routine updates.  WDBJ7
  • Local officials explained details of the Blue Envelope Program on September 4 that will help residents get official notices—further updates are scheduled for next week.  WDBJ7
  • The DMV has launched its Impact seat belt safety campaign to remind drivers and passengers to always buckle up—especially on rural roads where crashes are more frequent. The campaign follows Virginia’s new Christopher King Law that requires all occupants to wear a seat belt.  New River Valley News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Tech received a $611,861 HHS grant on September 4 to support research into the Aedes aegypti mosquito that can spread yellow fever and Zika virus—research that will improve our understanding of its impact on public health. The funding backs work that will benefit communities by advancing effective control measures.  New River Valley News
