COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chip is a 1 1/2-year-old male beagle who arrived on May 1 from the League for Animal Protection after transferring from the SPCA of Pittsylvania; he is neutered, microchipped, and fully updated on his care. The 20-pound dog with a playful spirit now awaits adoption to find his forever family.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • After a deadly school shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday unsettled many, a Virginia Tech psychologist said that repeated reports of such violence make it harder for students and staff to feel safe and that reaching out for help is key—Virginia Tech has also improved its emergency plans.  WDBJ7
  • The former Chamber of Commerce Executive Director pleaded no contest in an embezzlement case on Aug. 28—authorities said funds were misused during his tenure.  WDBJ7
  • Austin Blake Hixon from Christiansburg was sentenced to 86 months in prison for his role in a November 1 break-in at 1st Pawn where 15 firearms were stolen — he admitted to selling or trading guns for methamphetamine and is the last of five co-conspirators to be sentenced.  WSLS 10
  • Austin Blake Hixon, a 36-year-old from Christiansburg, pleaded guilty to possessing stolen firearms and perjury in a pawn shop break-in scheme—he is the final defendant sentenced and will serve 86 months in prison.  WDBJ7
  • On August 28 at about 4:25 a.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic call at a residence on the 2100 block of Mt. Pleasant Road in Shawsville where a victim was stabbed—law enforcement later located a juvenile suspect at about 6:10 a.m. and transported the injured adult to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening wounds.  New River Valley News
  • A juvenile was taken into custody after a stabbing left a woman hospitalized in Christiansburg on Thursday, Montgomery County deputies said.  WSET
