COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteer Montgomery is hosting a Gift Cards Galore raffle to raise funds for its 18th Annual Supplies for Seniors program scheduled for January that will deliver essential supplies to about 300 homebound seniors in partnership with the Christiansburg Recreation Center— the event aims to support vulnerable seniors facing rising winter costs.  New River Valley News

CRIME NEWS

  • Blacksburg police arrested Dylan Jared Truman—charged with three felonies and four misdemeanors—after investigating an armed robbery on July 23 at a business on 917 Heathwood Blvd—he is held without bond at Montgomery County Jail.  WSET
  • Authorities identified the victim in a suspicious death at High Bridge State Park on Aug. 26 — the investigation continues into the incident.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hokies returned to campus for the fall semester and University Libraries offered a wealth of academic resources—helping students access materials for their studies. The library will continue to support the campus with tools for research and learning.  Virginia Tech News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Community Health Center of the New River Valley earned five HRSA awards for quality, technology and value-based care. The center ranked in the top 10 percent for three years — it also received badges in heart health, cancer screening, health IT for quality and high-value care.  News Messenger
  • Virginia health officials reported a 43% increase in early syphilis and a 143% rise among women from 2020 to 2024 — with 35 congenital syphilis cases in 2024 and 18 so far in 2025 that risk causing serious health issues in infants. They advise pregnant women to get tested early to help prevent the spread of the infection.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech starting linebacker Caleb Woodson was arrested on Saturday for driving while intoxicated and lost his captain status after his arrest — he now faces uncertainty about playing in the season opener in Atlanta against South Carolina.  WSET
