EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fifteen Hokie Storm Chasers from the university studied severe weather in the Great Plains and saw tornadoes near Grygla, Minnesota—an event that boosted their practical learning—and they will continue tracking new storms as they head west. They used real-time models and data from the Storm Prediction Center to safely observe the storms. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Virginia Tech will host its 17th annual Gobblerfest on Friday, Aug. 29 on the Drillfield—this free event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and offers over 700 booths, live music and rides for students to explore clubs. Collegiate Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ This summer the local government lowered speed limits near Virginia Tech, including Downtown Blacksburg, 16 Squares and Prices Fork Road, to improve road safety as part of a U.S. Department of Transportation safe system approach. Officials said the change—supported by a 75% increase in pedestrian crossings—will be joined by future measures like off-road trails and bike lanes. Collegiate Times
- ➤ Montgomery County supervisors will meet today at 6:30 p.m. in a closed session and then hold an open meeting at 7:15 p.m. at the county government center at 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg to vote on consolidating the Public Service Authority—residential subdivision expansion in Walnut Creek and a regional hazard mitigation plan, with the PSA change taking effect Oct. 1 if approved.
