- ➤ Kira is a bright, affectionate one-year-old mixed-breed who spent 110 days in the shelter and is now available for adoption at Roanoke Valley SPCA — she is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm tested and will start training sessions through the Judith Goins Behavior Support Fund. - ➤ On August 20th, 2025, a veterans expo provided key counseling, benefits, and career resources to help local veterans. Community agencies led booths—guiding veterans through the array of available services. WDBJ7
- ➤ Southwest Virginia’s first and only certified diaper bank is set to open soon to provide free diaper supplies to families in need. Officials said the facility will help ease financial burdens for parents and improve access to essential resources. WDBJ7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Lyric Theatre is raising funds for significant renovations as the nonprofit plans to update the historic venue. The theatre opened on April 17, 1930 and was the third in the commonwealth designed to show films with sound. WSLS 10
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech’s newest cadets are training hard for the New Cadet Parade this Saturday. The 515 cadets—VT’s largest incoming class since 1965—are preparing to march and show their skills at the event. WSLS 10
- ➤ Dr. Cindy Smith of the Children's Emotions Lab at Virginia Tech said children may feel anxious when they experience new routines—like riding the bus or meeting new teachers—and she advised parents to help by guiding deep breathing, counting to 10, and talking with teachers or counselors if signs of anxiety appear. She stressed that keeping communication open can help kids feel safe as they adjust to school. WSET

- ➤ Todd Gilbert resigned as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia at 5 p.m. Wednesday—after serving since July 14—and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert N. Tracci assumed the role with no reason given for the resignation. WSLS 10
