  • Goodwill is offering back-to-school savings with discounts on merchandise for local shoppers—helping families stretch their budgets as they shop for school supplies and clothing.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local school officials kept troubled teachers in classrooms by using a process called 'Passing the Trash'—the system lets educators remain on staff while they receive additional oversight and support. Some parents and community members have voiced concerns over the approach as officials work to balance discipline with staffing needs.  WDBJ7
  • A loophole in education rules has allowed questionable teachers to keep teaching — local officials are looking at the policies and may change them soon.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech announced a new program that offers lifelong learning courses to help local residents build new skills outside the traditional classroom. The program will begin this fall—giving Blacksburg adults a chance to keep learning and growing.  WDBJ7

  • Virginia Tech professor Bill Hopkins is studying the eastern hellbender salamander and how flooding from Hurricane Helene and human changes affect its survival in southwest Virginia.
