CRIME NEWS

  • College students in Blacksburg can use discount programs to save on tech, streaming, food, and car insurance—programs like Student Beans and UniDays offer easy access to these deals. The options include special offers from Apple, Samsung, and Adobe that help make budgeting simpler.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Glen Cove Elementary opened its new administrative wing on Aug. 13 to expand office space for school staff — school officials say the addition will better support daily operations.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In mid-August 1940, heavy rains from a tropical system caused the New River at Radford to swell to record levels and forced hundreds to leave their homes in parts of Virginia and North Carolina. Historical markers show the flood’s high water marks—up to 35.96 feet—remain the worst seen in the region.  Cardinal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued two executive directives that launch a Rural Health Transformation program and require state agencies, healthcare providers, and local social services to work together—using new funding and training measures—to lower SNAP error rates. The directives aim to reduce the current 11.5 percent error rate and improve rural healthcare access using a coordinated approach.  New River Valley News
  • Montgomery County installed school zone cameras near local schools on Aug. 13 to monitor speed and improve safety. The county said the cameras—placed to enforce lower speed limits—will help reduce risky driving around school zones.  WDBJ7
