  • Tacos Los Toros is set to open soon in Blacksburg—local owners plan to offer a fresh taco dining experience to residents.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery Museum of Art and History will host the Heritage Day Festival on Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Christiansburg—this event celebrates our region's history with live music, local vendors, food trucks, instrument demos, and a raffle drawing for Virginia Tech game tickets on Sept. 1.  News Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Literacy NRV has launched its free GED YOUR WAY program to help adults learn reading, writing, and math skills at various sites across the New River Valley. Adults can register by completing an application and attending a new student orientation—those who prefer online lessons may borrow a Chromebook.  News Messenger
  • The Virginia Board of Education approved a new Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities on Radford University’s campus to serve gifted high school students from Giles, Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski and Radford City Public Schools. The program will open in fall 2026 — it will let up to 110 students earn college credits while studying arts and humanities.  News Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Montgomery County's planning commission meets at 7 p.m. at the county government center on Roanoke St. in Christiansburg — to review an updated regional hazard mitigation plan and vote on a plat for section one of the Walnut Creek subdivision — as part of ongoing efforts to improve regional safety.  Cardinal News
  • The NAACP MRF and LWV-MC are hosting candidate forums for local offices in Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County. In Blacksburg, the mayoral forum is on Aug. 21 and the town council forum is on Aug. 28 at the Municipal Building—voters can ask questions before early voting begins on Sept. 19.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Operation H.E.R. announced the Strong Minds, Strong Girls Mental Health Summit on Aug. 12 to offer experts and community members ways to support girls' mental health—details on the event's time and location will be shared soon.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Talan Bruce, a senior forward for Eastern Montgomery who led his team to a spring Class 1 state soccer championship, was named all-county/all-city co-player of the year and Class 1 player of the year (40 goals and 16 assists in 21 games). His play helped finish the season with 18 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie (their first state finals appearance).  News Messenger
