- ➤ On Sunday, several Verizon Wireless stores held their 13th annual backpack giveaway to help ease the back-to-school burden for local families. Ten Round Room LLC stores participated, and one location gave away over 40 backpacks in 30 minutes + the event provided needed supplies to students. WSLS 10
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested one man and are seeking another after a shooting killed a woman on July 27 — the investigation continues to find all those involved. WDBJ7
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Virginia sees many college graduates leave as 44% move out within five years, and a report shows Philadelphia used internships to keep young talent—local officials say similar efforts may help rural areas slowly build a stronger workforce. Cardinal News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport will hold a live burn training exercise through Wednesday, July 30, near Lot 18 by the air traffic control tower—officials say the fire and smoke from the exercise will not affect arriving or departing flights. The exercise will involve local and Commonwealth public safety teams who are practicing aircraft rescue and firefighting procedures. WSLS 10
- ➤ Montgomery County supervisors meet today at 7:15 p.m. at the county government center to consider a plan to consolidate the operations, maintenance and management of the county Public Service Authority. They will later vote on whether to invite public comments on the proposal for a potential move that could streamline utility services and improve coordination for new property developments — a decision to be discussed further on Aug. 25.
