  • Invasive spotted lanternflies have spread into the region and officials advise residents to crush each bug on sight to help control the pest. Researchers at Virginia Tech are testing ways for detection using dogs and ants to find egg masses—each of which holds 30 to 50 eggs that could damage local crops.  The Roanoke Times

  • Federal funding cuts have hurt local public television as Blue Ridge PBS and PBS Appalachia in Southwest Virginia face fewer resources—forcing them to depend on state and community support to continue their educational and cultural programming.  Cardinal News
