COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating 50 years of service after the Board of Supervisors honored its milestone on July 14; the department began with a $68,400 budget and now operates with $1.75 million supporting 90 sports teams, 12 parks, a community pool and 209 programs. Director Mitchell Haugh said the department still offers summer camps, hiking trips and other activities while relying on over 30 seasonal staff and 650 volunteers — a strong sign of sustained community involvement. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech student Cristian Romo-Bermejo was detained by ICE after allegedly assaulting police during a night out in Blacksburg—he virtually appeared before a judge on Tuesday, with his immigration hearing continued until August and a court date set for October on assault charges. WSET
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech researchers trained over 180 pet dogs to sniff out spotted lanternfly egg masses, with dogs correctly detecting them about 82% of the time—early detection helps protect local trees and crops from the invasive species. The study shows that any breed can be successful and encourages local pet owners to assist in reducing infestations. WSLS 10
- ➤ George Probst, a Blacksburg native and award-winning shark photographer, spent over 300 hours underwater capturing images of more than 200 sharks while working with Marine Conservation Science Institute—he hopes his work will inspire young kids to explore marine science and consider careers in shark research. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors approved many funding items at its July 14 meeting. It approved a deal with New River Community College that will give up to $450,000 to help students join the ACCE program for fall and spring (and the board also approved an opioid claims settlement along with other budget measures, including a $4,213 reimbursement for donated property). - ➤ Former Radford High School football coach Norman Lineburg died on July 17 at age 89 after a long health battle. His 38-year career influenced many Bobcats and memorial events are set for Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday, Aug. 2 at Radford University — the community will honor his legacy. News Messenger
- ➤ Virginia Tech will have Philip Montgomery as offensive coordinator and his son Cannon as assistant running backs coach this fall — they bring extensive football coaching experience and a strong family legacy. Their combined expertise is expected to boost the Hokies offense in the upcoming season. News Messenger
