CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Queen of Steam will return to passenger service this fall. Local officials said the restored train—an important piece of our town's heritage—will soon offer passengers a vintage travel experience. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Project Imagine hosted a back-to-school event in Blacksburg on July 18th—offering basic resources and support for students and families preparing for the new school year. WDBJ7
- ➤ At the Controlled Environment Agriculture Innovation Center, Kaylee South led research on edible plants with help from undergraduate Jacob Haymore. He studied at Danville Community College and will join Virginia Tech in the fall—work that came from a partnership between the school and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. - ➤ Virginia Tech is running a 4-week summer bridge program called STEP—short for Student Transition Engineering Program—for first-year engineering students to preview fall classes. The program gives students a schedule like what they will experience in college and includes a design challenge with GE Vernova. Virginia Tech News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ ABC13's Kelsey Childress and Dave Walls tested indoor archery in a preview for the Commonwealth Games as directors Bryan Eure and Barber explained that athletes shoot five arrows per round for a maximum score of 50—Kelsey, who had no previous experience, won a close contest with a score of 37. - ➤ Local organizers of the Blue Ridge Games shared a photo gallery of favorite moments from the 2024 event and invited locals to register free for this year's competition starting Aug. 1+ which features hiking, biking, water sports, and scavenger hunts. WSLS 10
