CRIME NEWS

  • Christiansburg Police are asking for help from the public to identify a suspect captured on surveillance footage in connection with a larceny at Southern Team Nissan—2130 North Franklin Street—that occurred on June 15th.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Public School Board accepted Superintendent Dr. Bernard F Bragen Jr.'s resignation on Friday, effective August 30, and the board will now appoint an interim superintendent + start the search for a permanent replacement. It noted Bragen's service and his wish to be closer to family.  WSLS 10
  • Officials said NRCC summer camps inspired young students by providing hands-on lessons that introduce various career paths. The programs attracted local participants and will offer more sessions later this summer—helping them explore future opportunities.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Virginia mom who lost her teenage son in a fatal crash helped lawmakers pass a new safety law on July 11 that aims to improve road safety measures. The law is expected to support families affected by accidents and guide actions to prevent future tragedies.  WDBJ7
  • The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Monday, July 28 at 7:15 p.m. at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg to gather citizen comments on a proposed resolution to amend the FY 2025-2026 budget by adding carryover funds + capital improvement appropriations not to exceed $37 million.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 3, the new Chair for the Health Subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce was appointed and toured rural hospitals in Pennington Gap, Richlands, Giles County, Blacksburg and a dental facility in Martinsville to discuss federal policy shifts and telehealth options. She will work with Energy and Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie on analyzing policies such as the $50 billion rural hospital stabilization fund and expanding incentives for new providers—efforts aimed at boosting rural health care.  New River Valley News
