  • Addy, a 13-year-old Blue Heeler mix, was adopted by staff at English Meadows Senior Living Facility in Blacksburg in February when her human parents could no longer care for her, and she has since brought comfort to many residents. Locals like 87-year-old Chet Fisher smile at her visits & appreciate the joy she brings to the facility.  News Messenger
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport is hosting its second Plane Pull this fall to raise funds for Special Olympics Virginia—last year, the event raised over $85,000 and will feature food trucks, cheering areas, and a small pull for kids.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia Tech data security expert Murat Kantarcioglu says fraudsters use public information to send scam texts that trick people into giving up bank and credit card numbers — scammers may soon use artificial intelligence to make these texts even more realistic. He advises smartphone users to verify messages through trusted sources instead of clicking on suspicious links.  Virginia Tech News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Tech’s Center for the Arts announced its 2025-26 season featuring shows by national and international performers—events will run from Sept. 19 through May 9 and subscriptions are now available with early ticket access and discounted student pricing; the lineup includes acts such as the Hot Sardines, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and selected Broadway shows with individual tickets on sale starting July 31 at 10 a.m.  News Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New River Community College is enrolling students in its Machine Technology program for Fall, offering hands-on training in blueprint reading, CNC operation, and machine maintenance—skills that will prepare graduates for careers as machinists, millwrights, and quality control professionals. The program provides pathways through career studies certificates and an associate degree option with available financial assistance.  News Messenger
  • On June 30, the School Board and County Supervisors met to review long-term school improvement plans, cost estimates and project timelines. Superintendent Bragen showed photos of finished work and officials said work could begin in about two to two and a half years if plans are approved soon (the projects are split into two phases) and the county’s 10-year debt capacity is nearly $301M (based on a 20-year term).  News Messenger
