GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Southwest Virginia localities will get more than $1.86 million in grants to improve flood preparedness after four major floods since summer 2021 as part of a $67 million statewide program announced by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Tazewell County received two grants for hazard assessments—including one for the Blacksburg Street community—while Damascus, Wytheville and others will use funds for drainage studies and resilience plans. - ➤ New Virginia laws went into effect July 1, and they include rules on transparent pricing, permanent alcohol delivery, a new crime for fentanyl dealers, an expanded seat belt requirement, a ban on drones over military bases, options for alternative student transportation in small school divisions and improved foster youth services—Governor Glenn Youngkin highlighted these changes as part of a broader policy update.
