ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Appalachian Power said water levels on the New and Roanoke rivers will rise rapidly starting Sunday, July 6 from Claytor and Leesville dams, with water rising up to two feet in minutes below Claytor and eight feet over seven hours below Leesville. The National Weather Service forecasts high temperatures next week — and PJM notified APCo that power generation may need to increase at hydroelectric plants to keep the grid reliable. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Youngkin announced Thursday that the Virginia Homeland Security Task Force reached over 2,500 arrests as of July 1st—officials added that state troopers started training with the largest new class since 2018 and that increased patrols in high crime areas will soon begin. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech Professor Stefan Duma demonstrated which fireworks are most likely to cause eye injuries and explained Virginia’s firework laws during a lab tour of safety practices. His research shows that fountain-type fireworks lower injury risks compared to projectile ones—and he urged careful handling to protect against serious accidents. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Kraft Heinz Foods Company is recalling about 367,812 pounds of fully cooked turkey bacon made from April 24 to June 11 due to a possible Listeria contamination—consumers should discard or return the affected products. The recall covers items with use-by dates from July 18 to September 4 that were shipped to retail stores and internationally—no illnesses have been reported. WSLS 10
