COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LEAP will host a fundraiser gala on June 27 to raise funds for its programs + organizers plan to release more details soon.  WDBJ7
  • Give Local NRV began today at noon as an online 24-hour day of giving to support over 120 local nonprofits throughout the New River Valley — donations can be made online or in person until noon tomorrow while $25,000 in grants and prizes boost local efforts including Christiansburg-based Literacy NRV.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County School Board shared Class of 2025 data that showed 1,643 students graduated, with 141 Blacksburg graduates accepted to the Graduate with a Plan program, 2 Blacksburg students committed to the military, and Blacksburg students receiving $2.1 million in scholarships. Board members also approved a $280,000 Capital Plan—covering school improvements from security updates to classroom renovations.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health officials at New River Health District in Christiansburg are advising residents to stay healthy as temperatures rise this summer. They suggest keeping cool by using air conditioning or visiting other cool public spaces (as seen in recent 911 call data on heat-related illness).  News Messenger

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Auburn 10U Minors baseball team came in second in the District 10 Cal Ripken playoffs on June 24 and will play at the Virginia State Cal Ripken Tournament on July 2 in Winchester. The team beat Pulaski, Floyd, and Blacksburg — they are the first Montgomery County Rec team to reach the state tournament and are sponsored by Marcus Christian and Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance.  New River Valley News
  • Shawnee Swim Club’s Maria Westcott and other swimmers took part in Tuesday’s 50-yard breaststroke heats at local venues. The competition—featuring teams from Blacksburg Aquatic Center, Hethwood, Piedmont, and more—will end with a championship meet at Christiansburg Aquatic Center on July 15.  News Messenger
