COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YMCA at Virginia Tech will host the region’s first-ever drone light show on June 25 to celebrate GiveLocalNRV Giving Day and its 150th anniversary. The event takes place at Bill Brown Blacksburg High School Football Stadium with gates opening at 7:30 p.m.—attendees will enjoy complimentary snacks, live pre-show entertainment and the drone show begins at 9:15 p.m.  News Messenger

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are seeking a man in connection with a bomb threat at Dollar General in Blacksburg on June 17th at 11:12 p.m. + officials said the investigation is ongoing with no additional details released.  WDBJ7
  • Police searched the home of a missing woman on June 17th—authorities said they are following up on leads.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Radford University’s Board of Visitors approved a plan for a new applied biotechnology major—pending SCHEV approval, the program will start in fall with up to 24 students taking the first two years at the main campus and the final two years in Roanoke. The program is designed to meet local and national demand for skilled biotech workers.  News Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia will receive more than $100M from a settlement with Purdue Pharma—up to $103.8M over 15 years will fund opioid treatment, prevention and recovery programs, according to Attorney General Jason Miyares.  WSET
  • The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation announced on June 17 that it awarded $4.4 million in grants to 63 recipients (for dam repairs, engineering studies, and emergency plans) to improve public safety against floods. The program aims to help local communities strengthen their dam infrastructure and reduce flood risks.  New River Valley News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Christiansburg softball star Kayden Camper entered the transfer portal after playing at Purdue last season—she led Christiansburg to its first Class 3 title—and Marshall University hired veteran coach Steve Snell as an assistant in men's basketball. Virginia Tech will soon play key games with the men facing South Carolina on Dec 2, Providence on Nov 8 and the women hosting Florida on Dec 4.  News Messenger
