COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hope To Walk will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Thursday, June 12 at noon when the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce cuts the ribbon at its facility at 3635 South Main Street in Blacksburg. The nonprofit invites the public to tour the facility after the ceremony.  New River Valley News
  • Local organizers updated plans for Father's Day weekend craft events in Blacksburg where families can enjoy hands-on DIY projects plus local vendors will participate. Organizers will confirm event times and locations soon.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Katie’s Ice Cream celebrated its 30th anniversary on June 9th—marking a major milestone for the local shop that has served community favorites for three decades.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bear Theatre wrapped up its inaugural season on June 9 by completing a series of local productions that attracted community support — the theatre thanked its audiences and announced plans for future performances.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Victoria Protasenko joined Virginia Tech’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital a few months ago as an associate farrier and uses old metalworking methods with modern science to keep horses sound and performing well. She teaches fourth-year veterinary students, builds her client base, and hosts local farrier clinics in Blacksburg — all while working to complete her degree.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will consider an ordinance at their meeting on June 23 at 7:15 p.m. at the Montgomery County Government Center in Christiansburg (adding Section 2-18 to allow a bonus program for officers and employees if funds are appropriated).  News Messenger
  • The Virginia Breeze saw a 25% increase in riders in March, reaching 8,049 monthly passengers while the Velley Flyer logged 4,385 riders. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation added more buses—21 Valley Flyer, six Highlands Rhythm, and three Piedmont Express—to meet the growing demand.  WSLS 10
