- ➤ A celebration of Nikki Giovanni’s life will be held on Sunday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg where friends, family, and local artists will honor the beloved poet and former Virginia Tech professor — a documentary on her work will be shown on Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre with free tickets limited to four per reservation. - ➤ Three Virginia Tech students earned the 2025 Jessie S. Yee Prize for music composition after submitting audio or video recordings this spring—Justin Winn won first prize, A.J. Fucito took second, and Zee Myrthil received third. Winn’s piece 'Three Short Movements for cello and piano' helped secure his win and each winner received cash awards of $500, $250 and $100. - ➤ The veterinary college held its 34th research symposium at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center where scientists showed over 70 projects that help people, animals and the community. One project saw inmates help run the state’s largest teaching herd — which brings in $3 million a year — to give students real field training and boost animal care. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Virginia Tech board approved a new budget that totals $2.5 billion and increases funds by $174.2 million over the last fiscal year, with most money coming from state sources and the plan beginning on July 1. The schedule provides for staff raises and higher assistant stipends—while officials remain concerned about federal research funding uncertainties and challenges for international students. - ➤ Amy Orders has been named the next associate vice president for public safety at Virginia Tech effective August 4, and she will lead the university’s safety operations including the police department, emergency management, environmental health and safety, and the student-led rescue squad. She brings over 20 years of experience (having served as assistant vice chancellor at North Carolina State) and will work with campus and local partners (including law enforcement) to keep everyone safe.
