COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dunkin’ opened its Blacksburg location and partnered with Special Olympics Virginia since April—raising over $4,000 for student athletes and hosting law enforcement volunteers at the opening celebration.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley has announced a summer exhibition in collaboration with the Lifelong Learning Institute, featuring more than 40 original works by LLI students and instructors. The exhibit opens June 12 at 21 W. Main Street in Pulaski with an opening reception from 5:00—7:00 p.m. and will run until July 26.  New River Valley News
  • Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved renaming the Moss Arts Center to Center for the Arts on June 3 (the new name honors Patricia Buckley Moss’s legacy and continues commitment to high-quality arts programming), and the venue will launch its 2025-26 performance season today with subscriptions opening on June 12.  Virginia Tech News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its meeting on June 3, the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved a slate of promotions, tenure, and continued appointments for faculty in many departments — from engineering to humanities. The changes were confirmed by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and affect numerous university staff.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At last week’s Blacksburg Town Council meeting, Mayor Leslie Hager-Smith read a resolution asking the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors to reverse its March decision to cancel a plan for expanding student housing and to freeze undergraduate admissions until additional housing is built — the council said that this change would help prevent extra strain on Blacksburg. The council also passed a proclamation recognizing Relay for Life Week from June 1-7 to honor locals affected by cancer.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emergency medicine physician Stephanie Lareau urged local residents to use EPA-approved repellents with DEET, treat clothing with permethrin, and wear long-sleeved light-colored shirts to reduce the risk of tick bites. She also advised checking the body for ticks after outdoor activities—promptly removing any found to lower the chance of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Virginia Tech News
