Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 31st of May.
Good morning, Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech researchers found that bed bugs likely began living with humans 60,000 years ago and that while their numbers declined during the ice age, the human-linked bugs later rebounded (the bat-linked bugs did not).
They also discovered a genetic mutation that may boost pesticide resistance, a finding that could help improve models to predict pest and disease spread.
Jeff Warfford, a Virginia Tech engineering professor, was named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers — a honor recognizing his nearly 30 years at Volvo and Michelin and his strong work teaching students.
Virginia Tech graduate student Samuel Daramola led a team that created the LSTM-SAM deep learning model to predict dangerous water levels during heavy rains and storm surges that coastal areas may face during the hurricane season starting June 1—tests on Atlantic tide gauges showed the model works well—and emergency planners will use it to help decide on evacuations and resource placement.
With summer camps starting and children heading outdoors, local dermatologist Dr. Craig Garofola recommends using mineral-based sunscreen with SPF 30—reapplying every few hours for both kids and adults.
The YMCA camp also builds in breaks for shade, and Branch Executive Alicia Kindred urges parents to pack labeled sunscreen to protect their children.
Virginia Tech scientists at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute found that a new peptide drug (JM2) slowed brain cancer growth in lab and animal studies by targeting cells that cause the tumor to return.
The study published May 16 shows promise for use with chemotherapy as future tests work on better delivery methods.
