COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Virginia Tech planned to relocate remains for 61 individuals from its columbarium, prompting families to voice strong concerns & express that they felt forced into a decision. A Montgomery County Circuit Court judge is hearing a request today for a temporary restraining order to pause the move.  WSLS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Veterans and their spouses in Blacksburg can now get job search help through a new local program—offering resume building and interview prep to support career transitions. The services are available immediately to boost local employment.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wildlife Center of Virginia is caring for 10 rescued black bear cubs from across the state, including some from our community, as officials work to secure proper care and rehabilitation.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Town officials propose to replace sharrows with a dedicated bike lane on Progress Street NW from Broce Drive to Watson Avenue (feedback accepted until June 26) as improvements build on the 2022 repaving work that added bicycle lanes between North Main and Patrick Henry Drive.  New River Valley News
  • Blacksburg Transit received the inaugural Hill Spencer Ridership Award from the Virginia Transit Association for record ridership growth. The system provided 4.7 million trips in FY 2025, a 26% increase, after launching its new Transit Center at Virginia Tech and implementing The Loops on campus to boost service and reliability.  New River Valley News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local advocates say summer break can worsen food insecurity as rising grocery costs and SNAP declines leave children without school meals. No Kid Hungry Virginia says programs like Virginia SUN Bucks and SUN Meals will help families access food at schools, parks, and community sites.  WSLS 10
  • On May 27, HHS awarded over $2.8 million in grants to support local health centers, including a $1,095,625 grant to the Free Clinic of the New River Valley in Christiansburg. Congressman Morgan Griffith said the funds will help meet rural health care needs.  New River Valley News
