- ➤ The Rotary Club of Blacksburg will host its 24th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Monday, June 9 at Blacksburg Country Club to raise funds for Rotary projects that support local organizations—registration costs $600 per team or $150 individually with payments due by May 31. The schedule includes check-in at 11 a.m., a range practice, lunch at 11:30 a.m., a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and an awards reception at 6 p.m. News Messenger

- ➤ The YMCA at Virginia Tech announced summer camps for youth and teens in Blacksburg, offering half-day sessions for teens starting June 2nd and full-day sessions for elementary children beginning June 9th—spaces are limited and early registration is encouraged. News Messenger
- ➤ Fourteen graduate students and postdoctoral fellows took part in the Translational Plant Sciences Center’s annual Career Exploration Initiative tour in St. Louis, where they visited agricultural businesses to learn about innovations in food and farming. - ➤ Blacksburg officials received a rezoning request to change the zone at Yellow Sulphur Apartments at 3503 Holiday Lane from General Commercial to Planned Residential for a multi‐family project with four apartment buildings and a community center—neighborhood input is scheduled for June 5th at 5:30 p.m. at the Motor Company Building and a Planning Commission Hearing will be held on July 1st at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building. - ➤ Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad received the Governor's Award for Outstanding EMS Agency on May 19 when Governor Glenn Youngkin presented it to Chief David English. The award recognized the squad's strong community service and excellent patient care — a testament to the team’s thousands of volunteer hours. News Messenger
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Shawn McDaniel, a seasoned fundraiser with 28 years of experience, was named the new executive director of development for the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and Health Sciences and Technology at Virginia Tech. He began his role on April 21 and will work from Roanoke—extending his efforts to Blacksburg and the greater Washington, D.C. metro area to support biomedical research. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ The Community Health Center of the New River Valley broke ground on its new 30,000-square-foot facility at 135 Akers Farm Road in Christiansburg on May 23—this project will expand service capacity, add specialists, and serve an extra 1,200 patients annually when it opens early 2027. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Town of Blacksburg mailed first installment 2025 real estate tax invoices that are due by Friday, June 27. Taxpayers may pay by mail, in the drop box at 300 S. Main Street, by phone, or online — a 10% penalty will be charged for late payments and interest starts accruing on July 23. New River Valley News
