- ➤ Members at Fit Body Boot Camp in Blacksburg completed the Murph Challenge on Memorial Day, a workout with a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run to honor Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, and 80 participants raised over $700 for the upcoming World War II Museum of the New River Valley—demonstrating their tribute to the fallen hero. WDBJ7
- ➤ Gerard Lawrence Flad died on May 24th while sitting in the shade at his home on Shadow Lake Road. He is survived by five siblings, two daughters, his grandson Antonie and his wife Gretchen, and his memorial service will be held on May 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. - ➤ Riley DeHority, a Virginia Tech student who worked at Bookholders, found in summer 2022 that they were paid below Virginia’s minimum wage and spoke with coworkers before filing wage claims that led to an NLRB ruling ordering policy changes and back pay; now, DeHority urges student workers in Blacksburg to check their pay and know their rights. - ➤ Navdeep Godara earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech by studying ways to protect pollinators and maintain healthy turfgrass as he analyzed ultraviolet light effects on weedy flowers. His work—recognized with more than 40 awards—has helped local turfgrass managers and will guide new strategies as he begins his assistant professor role at North Carolina State University. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Montgomery County supervisors meet at the government center on 75 Roanoke Street to discuss spending $150,000 for fire and EMS services, $330,000 for a bunkhouse for the Elliston fire department, + over $430,300 for school projects. The meeting starts with a closed session at 6:45 p.m. and the regular business at 7:15 p.m. Cardinal News
- ➤ Virginia officials and law enforcement are reminding all drivers and passengers to buckle up as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign after high-visibility patrols during Memorial Day travel. A new law starting July 1 will require every seat occupant to wear a seat belt+ a change aimed to reduce crash-related deaths. WDBJ7
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Indie—a 3-year-old Labrador—donated blood at Virginia Tech's Veterinary Teaching Hospital to help save Arya, a cocker spaniel mix, from life-threatening blood loss. The hospital has 16 dog donors and three cat donors and is asking pet owners to enroll their healthy animals for emergency donations. Virginia Tech News
