  • Berglund Center in Blacksburg needs $30M for repairs and local leaders will assess funding options soon (official meeting scheduled next week). Work will start once the budget is approved.  WDBJ7
  • Angels of Assisi welcomed 16 dogs from Puerto Rico on May 20 and is coordinating their care and adoption efforts locally. The shelter said it will complete medical checks and vaccinations before matching each dog with a new family.  WDBJ7

  • Montgomery County is preserving historic courthouse records (including frontier-era wills and documents about enslaved and freed Black residents) with a Library of Virginia grant that will fund the restoration as America marks its 250th anniversary.   • Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Kelly Guempel announced plans to boost teacher retention as turnover among newer hires has raised concerns. He said new support measures will be introduced soon & aimed at improving working conditions.  The Roanoke Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources reported that over 7,800 deer were tested during the 2025-26 season and 126 tested positive for chronic wasting disease in several counties; the agency expects no changes to DMA boundaries for the upcoming deer hunting season (hunters should test their harvests).  WSLS 10

  • Virginia health officials urge pool owners to enhance safety measures as summer begins—emphasizing proper barriers and supervision to prevent accidents. The advisory offers clear guidance to keep pool use safe in the community.  WDBJ7
